The
Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation Wills on Wheels
Program offers assistance to senior citizens and
non-ambulatory individuals by providing a volunteer
Atlanta wills lawyer to aid them in writing a will,
living will, power of attorney, or other advance
directive at no charge.
To
qualify for assistance from these volunteer Atlanta
wills lawyers, the clients must reside in Fulton County
and have a household income less than roughly twice the
federal Poverty Guideline.
The AVLF is also proud to offer free assistance
to City of Atlanta emergency personnel.
After the September 11th attacks, the
association decided to use grant money to send Atlanta
wills lawyers to fire stations across the county to
provide their advance directive services.
By
the end of 2002, the AVLF had provided complimentary
services to 150 firefighters.
In 2003, the program was expanded for inclusion
of Fulton County Marshals and Sheriffs.
Plans were set to expand again in the fall of
2004 to service the City of Atlanta Police Department.
The
Atlanta wills lawyers volunteer services include the
taping of training and copies of the manuals used by the
organization. Copies
of these were given to the Lawyers Foundation of Georgia
so that this program could be duplicated across all
judicial districts in the state.
The
clients of these services have the option of meeting the
Atlanta wills lawyer at the attorney’s office, in the
attorney’s office at the AVLF, or, if necessary due to
inability of the client to get to an office, to have the
attorney bring a laptop and printer into the home of
eligible clients. The
services of the volunteer Atlanta wills lawyers through
the AVLF has been of great assistance to not only the
government employees of Fulton County, but also to those
who are unable to afford or get to an attorney’s
office to assist them with necessary paperwork for
advance directives.
